bitcoin s image challenge persists

While Bitcoin celebrated its 15th birthday as the elder statesman of crypto, Gen Z has quietly become its most enthusiastic supporter. Nearly half of Gen Z globally own or have owned cryptocurrency, just shy of Millennial participation. Bitcoin may be the old guy in the room, but these digital natives don’t seem to care about its midlife crisis.

The numbers don’t lie. A whopping 48% of Gen Z has dabbled in crypto, with Bitcoin remaining the crown jewel. Two-thirds of people planning to buy crypto in 2025 want Bitcoin specifically. Not some flashy new altcoin. Not some meme token with a dog face. Bitcoin.

Gen Z isn’t just dipping their toes either. They’re diving headfirst into the crypto pool. About 35% allocate over half their portfolio to crypto assets. That’s not experimentation—that’s commitment. They view Bitcoin as a long-term digital asset, not a get-rich-quick scheme. Many are attracted to Bitcoin’s historical gains exceeding 100 million percent since its inception, making it a compelling long-term investment option.

The younger crowd’s investment behavior defies conventional wisdom. One-third of American Gen Z investors are comfortable allocating at least 5% to crypto, noticeably higher than the general population. They get their info from influencers and online communities, not stuffy financial advisors in suits.

Crypto isn’t just an investment for them—it’s becoming their everyday currency. Three-quarters of Gen Z are open to being paid in stablecoins instead of traditional money. Some are even using crypto for major life purchases, with 12.7% funding home down payments with digital assets.

Bitcoin’s reputation as the “boomer coin” hasn’t deterred young investors. They appreciate values like decentralization and autonomy that Bitcoin pioneered. The introduction of spot Bitcoin ETFs has only increased its appeal, with 48% of Gen Z more likely to invest because of them. This aligns with broader institutional trends where SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in early 2025, marking a significant milestone in cryptocurrency’s journey to mainstream acceptance.

In addition to seeking profit, nearly half of Gen Z globally are investing in cryptocurrency specifically to generate income, showing their practical approach to this emerging asset class.
