crypto rally before fed decision

Most of the crypto market is holding its breath. The Federal Reserve announces its decision October 28, and traders are cutting exposure before it lands. The widely expected outcome is a hold at 3.75% to 4.00%. Boring, right? Not quite. The statement and forward guidance are what everyone is really chasing.

Bitcoin has been trading like a risk asset. Plain and simple. It slipped below $80,000 in late October, with one report putting it near $79,817. That’s a sour turn after earlier in the month, when it bounced to around $82,539 and $81,961 as Fed hike expectations eased. Ethereum dropped right along with it. Nobody wanted to be the brave one.

Bitcoin is trading like a risk asset, plain and simple, and nobody wanted to be the brave one.

A hawkish Fed is the fear. It could strengthen the dollar and pressure risk appetite. Recent reporting called Bitcoin‘s recovery fragile unless stronger institutional demand returns alongside improving sentiment. Commentary has also tied crypto volatility to tech stocks and AI-related equities. So much for independence. JPMorgan reported $636 million in redemptions from U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, a sign that institutional demand has been softening.

Still, the bulls haven’t left the building. One analyst said Bitcoin could reach new highs if macro conditions turn supportive and institutional demand strengthens. A bullish technical view says a move above $86,000 could open a fast path toward $100,000. Michael Saylor went bigger, saying Bitcoin likely bottomed below $60,000 and is entering a new bull phase, with expectations above $100,000. Bold. Very Saylor.

Levels matter here. Several analyses mark $77,000 to $80,000 as a major structural support zone. Another outlook flagged $81,000 as support to watch. A Nexo-linked outlook said a hold could stabilize yields and support a move above the $82,000 neckline. Analyst Tim Sun marked $75,000 as key support if Bitcoin’s declines extend further.

The current path, though, is consolidation while markets wait for rate and inflation clarity. The tail risk is a surprise hike or hotter inflation, which could unwind part of the third-quarter rally. Ouch.

Altcoins are along for the ride, whether they like it or not. Earlier in October, BTC, ETH, and XRP advanced together as derivatives traders rebuilt bullish positions. By mid-October, Dogecoin and XRP showed mixed performance, proof that participation was uneven. Not every coin joined in.

Reports stressed that speculative coins can lag when traders de-risk before major macro events. Select altcoins can see better sentiment when funding rates and risk appetite rise. Some analysts have even shifted toward Ethereum and DeFi applications rather than pure Bitcoin exposure. Altcoins tend to show sharper price swings than Bitcoin because market speculation drives much of their trading.

Either way, altcoin moves remain tied to macro policy signals, not isolated crypto news. The memes don’t get a pass from the Fed.
