gemini shifts to super app

Gemini is pulling the plug on Nifty Gateway. The once-revolutionary NFT platform will officially shut down on February 23, 2026, after entering withdrawal-only mode on January 23. Users received migration instructions via email, directing them to move their assets to either Gemini Wallet or external destinations. Tick tock, folks.

Time’s running out for Nifty Gateway users as Gemini pulls the plug on the once-revolutionary NFT platform.

Launched in 2020 after Gemini’s 2019 acquisition, Nifty Gateway helped ignite the digital art explosion. Remember Beeple? Grimes? Those were the days. The platform facilitated over $1.2 billion in NFT transactions and hit sales peaks of $300 million in 2021. Not too shabby for digital pictures of monkeys and rocks.

The shutdown comes amid the broader NFT market collapse. From a staggering $17 billion market cap in early 2022 to a measly $2.8 billion today. Ouch. Nifty Gateway isn’t the first casualty, either. Multiple platforms have folded as collectors realized maybe spending millions on JPEGs wasn’t sustainable after all.

Gemini’s strategy seems clear: ditch the underperforming NFT marketplace and double down on their “one-stop super app” vision. This transition reflects Gemini’s strategic focus shift for its ecosystem. They’ll still support NFTs through Gemini Wallet, but the dedicated platform? Gone. The custodial model that made buying NFTs with credit cards possible for crypto newbies is history. So much for revolution.

The platform’s identity had already shifted dramatically. After rebranding to Nifty Gateway Studio in April 2024, it pivoted toward onchain creative projects. By late 2024, even the Discord channels went dark. The writing was on the wall – or rather, the blockchain.

Users now face a deadline: get your stuff out by February 23, 2026, at 11:59 PM UTC. Options include transferring to Gemini Exchange, external wallets, or competitors like OpenSea, Rarible, and Foundation. Miss the deadline? Well, that’s a problem for future you. Prominent crypto artist XCOPY has already issued public warnings urging collectors to withdraw their assets immediately to avoid complications.

For questions, the Nifty Gateway team remains available. Small consolation for the end of an era.
